Back to the Garden

Arches

A collaboration with Andrée Singer Thompson.

Arches led to a raised bed garden in shape of recycling arrow, going from compost to plants to fruit trees & back to compost. With interactive components.

Commissioned by cities of Oakland and Berkeley for RE Cycle Festival at Berkeley's recycling plant.

1993

15 x 50 x 150 feet

Permanent 3-acre eco-sculpture garden at San Francisco's waste management company, NORCAL Sanitary Fill Company.

Reclamation project of collected-on-site salvage materials and drought tolerant plants.

"Mountain" is homage to San Bruno Mountain's contested open space (visible immediately to the West): earthquake freeway rubble planted with rock-climbing plants that will eventually cover it; from it flows a "river" of 75 SF high school students' "hopes & dreams".

Cast stepping stones—some made by site staff & families—embedded with "memory" salvage.

Garden used for tours (+/-1,500 students per year) & exhibitions of resident artists' work.
